The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a festival held in the Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City with a history of over 700 years. On top of being recorded in the Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, it was also registered in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.

The Hakata Gion Yamasaki is a festival held by the Kushida shrine’s parishioners. The parishioners will carry the Yamakasa and race to carry their Yamakasa as fast as they can around their section of Hakata, which has been divided into several sections. Furthermore, you can see various “Kasariyamakasa” and “Kakiyamakasa” placed around the city of Fukuoka, and on the 15th you can see the festival climax called the “Oiyamakasa”.
Every year, you can see a large number of men filled with energy carrying the “Kakiyama” around the city center of Hakata.
