Contents

Do you know Hatsumode? Hatsumode (初詣) is the first shrine visit of the Japanese New Year. Generally, wishes for the New Year are made, new omamori (charms or amulets) are bought, and the old ones are returned to the shrine so they can be burned. There are often long lines at shrines throughout Japan.

Dazaifu Tenmangu (太宰府天満宮) is a Shinto shrine in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the head shrines dedicated to Tenjin (天神), the Shinto kami(god) of scholarship, the deification of a scholar, poet, and politician named Sugawara no Michizane. There are approximately 12000 shrines all over the country, that are dedicated to Tenjin.

Dazaifu Tenmangu shrines`s precinct spans over 3,000 acres (12 km2) and includes several structures. More than 8 million visitors are counted every year.

Especially students who will take an exam in the near future will go to the shrine to pray for good results. How about visiting this place at New Year with your family and friends?
