Shinto theatrical dance, Kagura at Takasu Shrine (April 26)

Kagura (神楽) is a Japanese word referring to a specific type of Shinto theatrical dance. It has evolved over the span of more than 500 years.
There are two types of performances:
Maikagura(舞神楽), where unmasked performer dance while holding sacred instruments (bells, swords, etc.) and Menkagura (面神楽), where dancers are wearing masks and perform mythological tales. All in all you can see 12 different performances including prayers for abundant harvests and people’s health.
In addition, in 1964 Kagura was designated as an important intangible folk cultural property in Fukuoka Prefecture. As mentioned before, dances include prayers for abundant harvest and healthiness. That`s why the Kagura is performed twice a year, in spring and autumn. It`s a special Japanese cultural asset we highly recommend anyone to watch at least one time.

| Take JR Chikuhisen Line (JR筑肥線) and get off at Susenji Station (周船寺駅). From there, take the community bus Kawabaru (コミュニティバス川原) and get off at Takasu bus stop(高祖). From there, it only takes 5min by walking to Takasu Shrine (高祖神社). |
