Fukuoka Christmas Market 2020

The Fukuoka Christmas Market is one of the city’s yearly winter traditions now coming up on its 8th year.

Although this year the lighting ceremony has been cancelled in addition to other precautions taken as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Christmas Market itself is scheduled to take place starting Wednesday, November 11th. (*Event dates and times vary by location.)

The Fukuoka Christmas Market is held in several venues throughout the city, including downtown Tenjin and Hakata Station, each location with its own unique character. Among the many Christmas market locations, the market held in the plaza outside of Hakata Station is especially popular, so today we’ll be talking a little bit about this Christmas market in particular.

Christmas Market in Hakata, City of Lights

2020xmas02_R

Opening a few days before the city’s other Christmas market locations on Wednesday, November 11th is the JR Hakata Station Ekimae Hiroba Christmas Market!

The Hakata Station Christmas Market is perhaps best known for its fabulous holiday light displays. Known as Hikari no Machi Hakata, meaning “Hakata, City of Lights”, each year this widely popular holiday light display illuminates the plaza just in front of Hakata Station in a gorgeous palette of blue-themed hues.

Here you can enjoy a truly magical atmosphere surrounded by the plaza’s veritable sea of holiday lights.

You can also enjoy a walk around the market browsing the many shops with their selection of authentic Christmas items imported from Europe.

Of course, you can also warm up with some of the Christmas Market’s famous hot wine, hot chocolate, as well as a variety of delicious hot food.

The hot wine comes in exclusive Christmas Market mugs which feature a different unique design each year, so don’t miss your chance to pick up this year’s exclusive item available only at the 2020 Christmas Market!

This year’s theme is “hope”

The theme of this year’s Christmas Market is “hope”.

Unfortunately, many of this year’s scheduled events had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so the annual holiday light displays and market shop lights illuminating the city streets just like every other year together with the smiling faces of the many visitors who have come to enjoy the season together (while taking precautions, of course) no doubt represent a beacon of hope for all.

When heading out this season remember to wear a mask and avoid spending prolonged periods in crowded areas, and be sure to take all the necessary precautions as you fill your heart with the warmth and joy of the Christmas spirit!
