Studio Ghibli’s traveling exhibition is finally here at the Fukuoka City Museum! Here you can experience the history of the Ghibli animations that have captured the hearts of fans worldwide. And now for our recommended highlights from the exhibition!

The Ghibli Exhibition

From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to When Marnie Was There, get a glimpse of how Ghibli created and released their animations through materials such as theatrical release posters and advertisements, some of which never before released to the public.

The first thing you will notice as soon as you enter the museum is an airship from Castle in the Sky!

While you may not be able to tell from the photo, the airship’s propellers are actually in motion, moving the vessel up and down! The sheer size and minute detail of this replica will transport you to the world of Ghibli from the moment you enter the building.

After enjoying the 1st floor, move on to the exhibition room!

Must-See #1 Ghibli Bar

The first thing you will see when you enter the exhibition room is the Ghibli Bar, where you will be greeted by a large Totoro! The bar is decorated with Ghibli items and is in fact a replica of the Ghibli film studio’s actual rest area called Ghibli Bar.

There is a staircase in the corner of the bar…check it out to find a hidden surprise!

Must-See #2 Poster Room

Next up on our list is a large wall covered in Ghibli posters! Here you find posters from all the Ghibli movies on display!

In addition to posters, you will also find original sketches and movie title logos from the films. This is truly a must-see for Ghibli fans!

After the poster room, there is a display called Media and Ghibli where you will find a huge number of Ghibli advertisements.

Here you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of Ghibli with exhibit items such as a replica of the office of Studio Ghibli film producer and general manager Toshio Suzuki as well as his work as Ghibli’s studio executive.

There are many Ghibli characters hiding in Suzuki’s office. How many of them can you find?

Must-See #3 The Ghibli Warehouse

Next up is the Ghibli Warehouse, jam-packed with a countless number of promotional items such as movie merchandise and tickets from the Ghibli films.

Look up and you will find ponyos swimming above you…

You can even meet a life-sized Baron! How exciting!

Here you can truly immerse yourself in the world of Ghibli. With so much to see, it could easily take an entire day to look at everything here in detail.

Must-See #4 Catbus

And can you believe it? Catbus is also in town for the exhibition! Notice his destination is “FUKUOKA”.

Must-See #5 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind – The World of Ohmu

And now for the stunning world of Ohmu! New to the exhibit, this display makes its debut at the Fukuoka City Museum exhibition.

Starting from the Legend of Wind, the exhibition takes you on a tour of the world of Nausicaä. Keep walking and…

…the world of Ohmu awaits! Realistic down to the very last detail, you’re in for a spine-tingling surprise!

Must-see #6 Flying Machines Exhibit

As you probably have noticed, a number of “flying machines” make an appearance in the Ghibli films. Here you can experience Ghibli’s “desire for the sky”.

And, of course, you will find the Tiger Moth from Castle in the Sky!
